White Spiderman Dies For Biracial Spiderman
Marvel Comics have replaced Peter Parker’s character with half-black, half-hispanic, Miles Morales, in efforts to attract the “new generation” of comic book readers.
Initially, I was all like “Yeah! Go you half-black, half-hispanic American’s, who’ve dreamt of the day you’d see your half-black, half-hispanic, ultimate-self, reflected in one of history’s greatest comics “.
But then I started to feel a little conflicted. I thought Spiderman was a ‘man’?! He was someone I (and many others) had come to love– someone we’d built a (one-sided) report with. Can you really kill Peter Parker’s character because he’s too white? Why did it have to be one or the other? Couldn’t they have just introduced a nice half-black, half-hispanic super hero into the comic as well?
Brian Michael Bendis, the writer behind Parker’s death and Miles arrival told the newspaper that the change was long overdue, saying that “even though there’s some amazing African-American and minority characters bouncing around in all the superhero universes, it’s still crazy lopsided”.
Opinions aside, it’s a bold move for Marvel Comics. It says the world is changing.
Read more about it here, here and here.
What do you guys think? Success or fail?
